Rejoice Always
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
— 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Today’s reading from First Thessalonians begins with an encouragement to “rejoice always.” With Christmas Eve just a week away, with houses adorned with twinkling lights, with cheerful songs playing on the radio, some of us find it easy to get into a rejoicing mood.
For others of us, though, these times can be difficult. Short, cloudy days and long, dark nights can influence those with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Repetitive songs can grate at our nerves as we rush to complete tasks. Joyous sights can remind us of lost family members who are no longer with us.
It can be easy to think that Paul is being naïve in encouraging us to always rejoice. Surely we are not expected to ignore any negative emotions and force ourselves to be happy at all times? Of course not, for sadness, grief, and frustration are normal, healthy emotions.
Instead, Paul is telling us to be glad in the certainty that, no matter what emotions govern our day, God is with us “in all circumstances.” It is this assurance for which we give thanks. So, whether it is in a joyous song or soft, whispered prayer, rejoice today that the God of peace is with you.
